Helen Shirley – Social Work Intern

Currently Studying Masters of Applied Social Work (Massey University)

My name is Helen; I am currently interning at CARE Waitakere as part of my second year of the Masters of Applied Social Work.  I gained my undergraduate degree in Psychology in 2016 from Massey University with prior studies in Fashion Design (USA) and computer graphic design through AUT.  I would like to find a way for these fields to complement each other to benefit mental health, particularly through art therapy and visual arts applications.  During my studies, I lived in San Francisco for five years, where I gained the beneficial experience of living in another country and experiencing different cultures and ways of life.  For the past seven years, I have been working in hospital settings in the administration sector in ED, Older people’s health, and Urology.  I am mum of Indiana who is 3.5 and work part-time in Urology at Auckland City hospital as a ward clerk.   My future interests in Social work include working with Older people, those with chronic health conditions and within areas of mental health.
